11.12.08 - Cap Henry Season Review

Bellevue, Ohio - 18 year old young gun Cap Henry wrapped up his sophomore sprint car season recently with success. The talented pilot scored two victories in the 305 division, a top 15 finish in the O'Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions driving his 360 car and a first ever A-main start with the Ollie's 360 Challenge field at Eldora Speedway, running with the likes of Kasey Kahne, Fred Rahmer, Tim Shaffer, Dale and Dave Blaney and numerous other NASCAR and Outlaw regulars.

Cap's final event of 2008 was on September 20th at Fremont Speedway as he tried his first ever venture in a 410 non wing sprint car event. Looking to make the main event, Henry came up just short after finishing the B-Main in the seventh spot, one position outside the top six transfer.

"Unfortunately I tried way too hard in my qualifying attempt, almost spinning the car and that left me running from the tail of the field all night," explained Henry.

What was most impressive was his never say die attitude as Cap started in the final position of the B-main, 19th, and drove the car like a crafty old veteran running all the way to seventh position, one spot from transferring to the A-main. Cap's new teammate and mentor for the 410 division, Brian Smith, would finish a solid seventh in the non wing show after having to pit while running third.

Team Owner Kit Henry expressed his concerns of the sophomore jinx, if it really exists, and hit the team hard this year as they had numerous DNF's due to parts breakage. "We destroyed three cars this year but only one due to driver error. We had numerous part breakages on both new and used parts, so Crew Chief Keith Whaley and I are very cautious of what we purchase now."

Overall the young driver managed to average third place finishes in his heat races and top ten finishes seven times in the 305 division. The team led the points at Attica Raceway Park in the 305 division until half way through the season. Furthermore, the team was running in the top five in series points when they decided to make the move to 410 class.

The 410 racing didn't start well for the Ohio based squad as a wheel broke while running second in his debut after leading the first half of the heat race causing the car to fly off the track and have the motor to be cut from the frame. At the second night and second 410 race at Fremont, the team's just purchased 410 motor was destroyed. Qualifying is a whole new learning curve for the young driver in the 410 division. Cap has proven repeatedly that he is fast and smooth enough to run with the 410 drivers.

The team now known as Team CHR is already in preparation for the 2009 season focusing on the 410 division with two cars for drivers Cap Henry and Brian Smith. Brian and his family have been a strong addition to the team, not only as a mentor to Cap, but also as a strengthening of the family atmosphere the team has. Team CHR has a lot of fun together both on and off the track and it truly is a team effort. All Team CHR members from 2008 have agreed to return in 2009.
